Tips To Lower Weight Watchers Points For Cocktails

When finding the best Weight Watchers cocktails and alcoholic drinks, variety is the key. Different types of alcohol offer different health benefits and risks, so you need to balance them out to reap the most benefits. Luckily, variety is a given when it comes to drinking alcohol. However, that doesn’t mean you can drink anything under the sun.

Now a mocktail is a great option; often, you can have a zero-point mocktail using no sugar mixers. But let’s face it, sometimes a cocktail or a glass of wine hits the spot. Now one thing I love about WW is that nothing is off-limits; it’s all about moderation.
A Note From Jenny
When starting any healthy lifestyle, consult a doctor to address any personal health concerns. Some things can only be addressed medically and by a professional. Blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and hormones checked at a physical before starting and at least once a year, as these all can affect an active lifestyle.
With so many different programs, such as Weight Watchers, Keto, and macros, it can be hard to know what to pick. (If you’re interested in Weight Watchers, you can sign up -> here and sign up for $10/month for 10 months.)
I personally use the app Myfitnesspal to track my food. I use macros and focus on High Protein (calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrates) and rotate through cuts and maintenance calories. (Use a calculator like this -> here) . I did WW for years, but now that I am more maintenance, with cuts throughout the year, and focusing on mobility with strength training. There is no right or wrong answer, as all bodies are different.
What Are The Healthiest Weight Watchers Cocktails and Alcoholic Drinks?
If you want your drinks to be healthy, lower added sugars and unhealthy ingredients. Fortunately, most drinks fall into one of six categories: light red wines; red wines; dark red wines; white wines; clear liquors such as brandy or whisky; and malt beverages such as beers and ales. Non-alcoholic versions are also available in most of these, significantly lowering the points.
What are the Benefits of Drinking Light Red Wines?
Light red wines are generally higher in polyphenols—antioxidants that may help reduce blood pressure and reduce risks of heart disease. However, light red wines are mostly water, so most of the benefits listed above come from the small amount of alcohol they contain. Many wines are loaded with other nutrients and antioxidants, making them a great alternative to sugary soda.Â
What are the Benefits of Drinking Dark Red Wine?
Dark red wines are made from the same grapes as red wines, but the grapes are allowed to ferment longer and are then processed to make a darker, richer wine. The dark red wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, have more antioxidants than light red wines and contain small amounts of resveratrol.
Dark red wine drinkers could reap other health benefits from the small amount of alcohol present—they could improve blood flow, reduce risks of type 2 diabetes, and help lower cholesterol levels. However, dark red wines are also considered high in sugar, so if you’re looking for a healthy way to increase your alcohol intake, this is not it.
What Are The Best Light Beers For Weight Watchers?
For light beers, not all brands are created equal; even within the same brands, the light beers can vary in their points. For example;
- Coors Light beer  12 ounces, is 4 points.
- Bud Light 12 ounces is 4 points
- Budweiser Select 55 12 ounces is 2 points
- Corona Light 12 ounces is 3 points
- Michelob Ultra Light 12 ounces is 3 points
- Kirin Light 12 ounces is 4 points
- Busch Light 12 ounces is 4 points
When dining out at restaurants, draft light beers can be higher in points, with On the Border and Red Lobster at 6 points each due to their serving size. There are plenty of light beers, but use your Weight Watchers app to make the best choice.
Tips on Ordering Drinks That Are Low in Points
- Most wines are 4-6 Weight Watchers points for a 5 Fluid Ounce glass. However, sweet dessert wines are much higher at nine or more points for that same five ounce glass.Â
- Adding ice, Diet Sprite, or seltzer is a great way to have more wine without adding additional calories or sugar.
- A light beer is usually a good choice as most brands are around 3 points for a 12-ounce serving. Just double-check serving sizes when dining out.
- Stick to single-liquor cocktails to minimize points and use low calorie, low sugar mixers.
- Make sure to read the labels. Most alcoholic drinks list the number of calories in the drink, as well as the number of grams of sugar. A drink with more sugar than calories will have more points.
What Are The Benefits of Clear Liquors?
Clear liquors such as vodka, brandy, whiskey, and tequila are distilled. Some people prefer drinking these liquors because they’re slightly less sweet than other types of alcohol. Clear liquors are generally higher in antioxidants than other types of alcohol—especially if they’re aged in a barrel for a few months.Â
What Are The Best Low Point Cocktails?
Some Weight Watchers cocktails are already light, to begin with. Pairing regular clear liquors with diet soda, sparkling waters, or sugar-free mixes is easy. A Bloody Mary, classically made with tomato juice and vodka, is a great, healthier drink you can occasionally enjoy without using many points.Â
Best Way to Lighten Up Traditional Cocktails
If you’re looking for a way to lighten up your traditional cocktails, you’re in luck! There are now sugar-free, low-calorie versions of many popular cocktails available. For example, Skinnygirl offers a variety of mixers, readily available online or in stores, to have on hand for any occasion. Another alternative is making your drinks with simple substitutions.
- Crystal Light– Mix according to the directions and add a tequila or vodka shot.
- Skinny Jordan– Use these mixes according to the directions. You can add more water to make them less sweet or bubbly water to increase the liquid volume without adding points.
- Skinnies– These sticks are terrific for making cocktails out of water and shots. Perfect for camping or backpacking.
Being on a weight loss journey does mean you have to give up an occasional night of fun. Alcohol can be a fun part of a healthy diet if you drink in moderation. The types of alcohol you drink are more important than the number of glasses you drink. Make good choices, track your points, and you will be fine.
