I have been making this stovetop chicken casserole for my family and friends since 2009, and it is always a hit! It uses pantry essentials that almost everyone has on hand. Older kids can also make this easy recipe with little adult supervision.
Easy Chicken Stove Top Casserole Ingredients:
Stove Top Turkey -You can use any version of the Stovetop stuffing mixture.
Shredded Cheese – Cheddar cheese is perfect or a Mexican three cheese blend
Hot Water
Milk– I used 2% milk when I made mine.
Shredded Chicken Breast-I used boneless skinless chicken breasts, but you can use chicken thighs.

How To Make Slow Cooked Chicken Shredded
I have a guide here on how to make a large batch of shredded chicken. You can meal-prep enough for the week or freeze it to pull out later!
The CliffsNotes version is to fill your crockpot with chicken breasts and broth. Allow the chicken to cook until it reaches an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees. Remove the chicken from the broth and shred it. Use meat claws or a Kitchen Aid mixer to do so.

How To Make Stove Top Chicken Casserole:
It should be warm if you need to cook and shred your chicken. If using leftovers, shred your chicken or turkey for this recipe and then reheat the meat so it is warm. You will want one pound of shredded chicken.
Spray your casserole dish with a nonstick spray. I used a Pyrex 2-quart oval because the lid made it perfect for storing the leftovers; a 9X13 works as well.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Place the shredded chicken into the bottom of the casserole pan.
In a separate bowl, mix 1 2/3 cups of hot water and the entire contents of the Stove Top box so it’s moistened. Let it sit while you assemble the rest of the ingredients.
Pro Tip: I use a larger Pyrex measuring cup or a smaller Pyrex mixing bowl. Because both are see-through, I can see if there are dry spots in the stuffing mix as I mix.
Important Note: You do not need the tablespoons of butter listed on the box; you could add melted butter, but it will add calories.
Mix the 1/3 cup of milk, can of cream of chicken, and cheese in a separate bowl.
Spread the cheese soup mixture over the chicken. I use a spatula to do this because it helps smooth the mixture.
Spread the Stove Top Stuffing Mix over the top of the chicken and soup mixture.

Bake for 15-20 minutes, depending on your preferred crunchiness of the Stovetop Stuffing. This casserole is baked uncovered in the casserole dish.
Remove and serve your chicken stuffing bake! This will be one of your family’s favorite recipes; even picky eaters have been known to love this.

How To Lighten Calories For Stove Top Casserole
You can reduce the calories by using reduced-fat chicken cream, low-fat milk, and reduced-fat cheese. I prefer to use full-fat, but to each their own. As with any recipe, customize it and verify the point values based on your brands.
What To Serve With Chicken Stuffing Casserole
Now, I love to pair this chicken and stovetop casserole with veggies or a salad. The kids love this casserole with vegetables; most pair well to make an easy meal.
Sides: Air Fryer Bacon Asparagus, Oven Roasted Baby Potatoes, Air Fryer Brussell Sprouts, Green Beans, Ceasar Salad, Green Salad, Baked Sweet Potatoes, Air Fryer Broccoli, Grilled Zucchini, Grilled Corn On The Cob, Air Fryer Zucchini Chips, Crockpot Quinoa, Cole Slaw, Kernel Corn

How To Store Leftover Stuffing Casserole
Store in the fridge in an air-tight container for 3-4 days.
I have never tried to freeze leftovers, as the dish disappears from everyone eating the leftovers the next day.

I make this all the time except I never put cheese on it, it reminds me of Thanksgiving! Good post Jenny!
question what is the temperature on how to preheat the oven
350 Degrees for your oven
sounds yummy! =)
thanks for the recipe, this sounds & looks so good, think I might try it.
Made this tonight for dinner. Was good for a fast fix meal! Put a little to much chicken in mine so next time I will do less and think I’ll add a small onion. Everyone in the family give it a ?.
I do one similar to this, but I add part of a bag of frozen mixed vegetables to the chicken and chunk the chicken instead of shredding it.
That sounds amazing too!! I need to try it with frozen corn we always have that as the side with this!
This sounds like a dish we make with our Thanksgiving leftovers. I’ll have to add it to our winter meal rotation.
This sounds easy and delicious!
Sounds yum!!
This sounds absolutely delicious!! Can you do this without the cheese? I’m making a big batch of shredded chicken and was gonna make this for our Sunday night dinner!
hello question
what kind of cheese do you use for this recipe
I use cheddar cheese or Mexican three cheese when I make this.
I was wondering the same thing because I don’t have but a small handful of cheese probabyl not even 1/3 of a cup…
My mother in law gave me a similar recipe years ago, when my husband and I were first married. I have made it many times over the years. She is sick now, and I am taking this to her tomorrow. I could not find her recipe, but this one is very close. I look forward to her reaction. I prepared it tonight and will bake it when we arrive at her house tomorrow. I am pairing it with my broccoli casserole and mashed potatoes. Comfort food at its best. Thank you!
thought it was a little bland, I didn’t add the cheese, I didn’t think it was necessary in this type of dish. I would make it again but I’d season my chicken much more. it was quick and easy which is a plus
Maybe it would not have been bland if you had added the cheese
can I use chicken broth in stead of water?
Made this tonight and we really enjoyed it! The cheese was an extra bonus. Thank You!
Made this for my husband tonight. He loved it.
I love easy recipes like this! I use chicken broth instead of water, and a little mozzarella cheese instead of the cheddar.
You fail to mention if you cover the dish while its cooking or if it cooks without one. would you please clarify for me which method is used? thank you so much
Uncovered I will add a not to the post now. Thank you for pointing that out.
Do I cover?
You forgot to let us know what temperature to set the oven on.
So sorry! It was in the post but not the recipe card. I added to the recipe card as well, 350 degrees!
I am definitely adding this to my menu plan. I love anything casserole and the fact that this is a WW recipe is even better. I hope that you have a wonderful week!
