How to Improve Boxed Angel Food Cake Mix
Angel food cake is great on its own. But did you know you can easily customize it as well to try lots of new flavor combinations. Mixing boxed angel food cake with pie filling or canned fruit makes for easy dessert recipes the whole family is sure to love. And you’re sure to love how easy they are to make.
You can also add a little extra flavor to the cake mix with a few drops of extract flavoring. I love using a little almond or lemon extract in the batter to give the cake an extra boost of flavor.
What Pans Are Best To Bake Angel Food Cake In
There are specific pans for making the perfect angel cake. These types of pans, known as tube pans or more commonly as “angel food cake pans”, have flat sides, a hollow tube in the center, and detachable bottoms. These characteristics help the lighter cake batter cling to all the sides of the pan to create the rise necessary for the beautiful, airy cake and to be easily released from the ungreased pan. Some tube pans even have “feet” at the top, as a traditional angel food cake should be properly cooled upside down. (personal the mini tube pans are my favorite)
It is often suggested not to use a bundt pan for angel food cake. While it does have the hollow tube center, the fluted sides of the bundt pan make it so the batter has a more difficult time rising properly and removal of the finished cake is far more difficult.
There are methods to using a regular cake pan or even a donut pan. I’ve highlighted a few of those suggestions in the section below.
Tube Pan – This is the classic baking pan for angel food cake. It’s like a bundt pan but with flat sides instead of fluted. The flat sides not only help the cake rise better, but allow the cake to slip from the pan more easily. Tube pans, unlike bundt pans, also have detachable sides like a springform pan to release the cake more easily.
Mini angel food cake pans – These mini pans are great for making individual angel cakes. They’re just smaller versions of tube pans, but we love to use them around here. I’ll make the cake batter and portion it so each of my kids can make their own cake. They love it!
Cake Pan – If you are using a regular cake pan, a springform pan or pan with a removable bottom is best. High-walled cake pans are also better to use. You can also use a little hack that the host of The Great British Baking Show, Mary Berry, once suggested. Wrap a tall metal can tightly in parchment paper and place it in the center of the pan before pouring in the batter. You can keep the can secured by filling it partially with pie weights or water.
Donut Pan – You can also make little angel food cake donuts using a non-stick, ungreased donut pan. Just be careful not to overfill the donut pan or there’ll be a devil of a mess.
