This easy Homemade Breath Dog Treat Recipe is the perfect breath-saving treat for dogs. We usually buy Bentley dog breath treats, but after Kylie read the ingredients, she opted to make them instead. And let’s face it: anything that freshens up doggy breath and bad breath is a total win, right?

I have to give it to Kylie; she has taken her role in caring for Bentley seriously and handled it well. I love that she has been concerned with the quality of his food, just like the food in her diet. Plus, by making dog treats, she is also learning to cook.

How To Make homemade dog breath treats:

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees.

Oats Ground up in a food processor

In a food processor, ground up 2 1/2 cups of oatmeal into an almost flour-like consistency. (Leave aside the extra 1/4 cup for a minute).  I use mine for so many different things, and it is so much easier than a cheese grater; your knuckles will thank you!

Chopping up the herbs, I stripped my mint off the stem and then chopped just the leaves of the mint.

Ingredients for Homemade Dog Treats On A Cutting Board

Whisk the egg, water, and oil together in a bowl.

Mix into the water mixture your parsley and mint.

Slowly mix in the 2/12 cup of oats. This can be hard to do, so I did this part with my hands to ensure it was spread out properly.

Use your food processor to grind up about a 1/4 cup of oatmeal; you will use the powder for rolling out your breath biscuits.

Next, spread some extra 1/4 cup of oatmeal flour onto your counter.  We used dog cookie cutters to cut out our treats.

Spread the cut treats on a cookie sheet or the prepared baking sheet and bake for about 35 minutes until they are crispy.

Note if your dog is a pup, you will want to use smaller dog bone cookie cutters.

How To Store Mint Dog Treats

Store these in an airtight container. For the best freshness, keep them in the fridge for 5-7 days. On the counter, they will be good for about 2-3 days.

I personally have not frozen these because of the fresh herbs.

Tips and Tricks For Making Fresh Breath Dog Treats

  • Use parchment paper to line the baking sheet and replace it between each batch to keep your cookie sheet clean.
  • Use fresh mint and fresh parsley for the best results.
  • A food processor or a strong blender to blend down the oatmeal, or you can buy oat flour.

More Dogs Oral Care Tips

Now, there is more than just breath treats that go into taking care of your dog’s dental care. While treats are helpful, using a dog toothbrush and toothpaste is important in combating dog breath. Just like human poor oral hygiene can lead to serious health issues in dogs. These issues include diabetes and heart disease, and since dogs can’t tell you if they are in pain, it can be missed.

Other Tools To Help With Oral Hygiene

  • 4 In-One Toothbrush—This toothbrush is different in simultaneously cleaning both sides of the dog’s tooth. If your dog is anything like Bentley, you want this done quickly. Be sure to pay attention to the size of the toothbrush and get the right size for your dog.
  • Toothpaste– Just like humans, toothpaste freshens the dog’s breath, cleans plaque, prevents tartar formation, and helps to soothe and heal gums.

Why Bow Wow Labs

Like my human children we are very protective of what products we give Bentley.  One of the first reasons I was drawn to Bow Wow Labs is that they are made in the USA.   We love them because they have Bow Wow Buddy, the world’s safest bully stick holder.

This helps the dog not hurt itself while eating a bully stick by securing and holding it—not just bully sticks but also split antlers, cheese, salmon skins, and more. And it’s not one size fits all; different sizes fit your dog.
