There is no avoiding it, as we stood in line this week for orientation it hit me I have a jr high student. No, seriously she’s not my little two-year old anymore like I want her to be, she is 12 and starting jr high. She’s excited and scared about the new adventure and getting older, where as I am just petrified. All three of them are just growing up too fast and now with how crazy our summer schedule has been, we are focusing right now on getting back to our school routine. I don’t know about your kids but my kid’s sleep schedule is all out of whack and has been most the summer. So how can you help your kids get a good nights sleep? Thank you to Nectar Mattress for sponsoring this post and for supplying us with a mattress to try out, regardless all opinions are our own to our experience.
Now even with the summer time, we did make sure we kept up with a decent bedtime hour, for the most part, they were rarely up past 9 pm. Now, this also gave me some a bit of quiet time, but I also get up hours before the kids to work so it was important I got to bed early. However, weekends can tend to be a free for all for bedtime unless we have set plans.
Ways To Help Your Kids Get A Good Nights Sleep
Remove Cell Phones From Rooms- This is a big one Kylie has had her cell phone the longest but we have been working hard on keeping her phone out of her room after 8 pm. Kinda like a cell phone curfew. But it helps her to start to chill out and slow her mind down, no checking Instagram, musically, or texting her friends. So on the stair rail the phone goes after 8 pm, as well as the siblings if they were using one as well.
Night Time Hygiene Routines- This is a big one as the kids get even older and probably enough for another post. But helping them to establish a good hygiene at the same time to get them to settle down. With three kids we tend to do staggered bedtimes so it leads to sharing the bathroom with less fighting, and let’s face it that keeps the kids a lot calmer when it comes to bed time.
Enforce Quiet Time- Having time for the kids to just lay in their beds and read books before going to bed has made a world of difference. They are starting to look forward to that quiet time every night. Plus score one for mom, they are reading the amount they are supposed to for school and their summer reading programs!
Filling Bed Time Snacks- I know my kids can’t be the only ones, who get out of bed five minutes after going to bed staring. We make it a point that half an hour before bed they have a good filling snack about 30 minutes before bed to stop this “bedtime starving” syndrome. PRO-TIP have snack time before their reading time they tend to settle down really well.
Room Darkening Curtains- Seriously this can be a game changer, where we live we have late sun during the end of the school year. But during the early months of the school year, our sun can come up early waking the kids up before they need to be awake. Having room darkening curtains can make all the difference for the kids for getting a good solid sleep.
A Good Mattress- Now I have to say this is one department we realized this year I was slacking on for Kylie. When I got divorced I bought what we could afford so all three kids could have a bed to sleep in. At the end of last school year Kylie started to complain she just couldn’t get comfortable any more on her mattress, plus when the dog would crash with her the twin size bed was a tight fit. Plus with how close her and Bella are they often have sleep overs in her room as well, making it even more uncomfortable. I was so excited to surprise her with getting a Nectar Sleep Memory mattress as well as a semi room make over!!

Now I don’t know about you but I HATE mattress shopping, the last time I bought a mattress it was a four store marathon with multiple trips back and too many choices! I loved that we were able to read the reviews and firmness rating in picking out a mattress for Kylie. Kylie loved that she could get on to the Nectar mattress website (see it -> here) to read the reviews and watch videos herself to decide.
The best about Nectar is part the shipping, I was expecting a week for it to get here was less than 2 days. I loved that the mattress is all rolled up it was easy for her and me to haul up the stairs. PRO TIP wait until the bedroom to remove and unroll the mattress, carrying up is so much easier in the tube!!
So this part wasn’t too bad getting it out of the blue tube either, she pulled on one end and I did the other. It probably would have gone faster but we couldn’t’ stop laughing the whole time, was quite the mother daughter experience for sure! The other two kids kept looking in asking what we were up to.
We called this our handy dandy blue thingy. It worked great at slicing the plastic wrap off the rolled up mattress!! Was so easy to do, Kylie even did most of the sliding to slice the plastic off. We did have to maneuver a bit to plastic off once cut and the mattress rolled out but it was more so due to bulk then being difficult to do. Neither Kylie or I am the most coordinated or graceful so it was interesting.
This fascinated all three kids how flat the mattress and the pillows were when we took them out! Before we even got the next layer of plastic wrap off it crazy how fast the mattress started to fluff up to the normal size!
Isn’t that crazy how fast it starts to go?
I had to force Kylie to stay off the bed for a while, by making her wash bedding and clean up her room a bit before testing out her mattress. Suffice to say she was in love with the mattress and pillows before we even got her bedding on the bed!!
I have to say I loved how easy it was and it fit right into our full size mattress cover and the sheet set as well. She had to have a sleep over right away with her sister on the first night, and the dog too!

Please tell my husband to keep his cell phone put away at night. He keeps complaining that he has trouble sleeping but turns his phone on if he can’t fall to sleep in 30 seconds.

I love the idea of getting a Nectar mattress, it seems like a really good fit for us. I need to get my youngest a new mattress to see if it helps him sleep better.

Nectar looks like a good one. We have a mattress that is way too thin. Love the cell phone idea. No phones in the room is huge.
