It seems like the New Year is sneaking up on us this year! One of my New Year’s Resolutions is organizing, downsizing, and decluttering, our new home more. Instead of waiting for the New Year to clean and declutter use these tips to get your home ready for the holidays and family parties. Nothing like starting fresh in the new year with a home that is organized and easier to clean! With a little bit of work now you can set your home up to be less work to clean throughout the year! If you are like me and you have a bit of time off during the holidays you can use that time to check one more thing off your to-do list!
Make Messes: Yes, you read that correctly. If there are messy jobs that you need to do but are putting off, do them now! Give the dogs a bath, let the kids play with sand art, dust the ceiling fans, etc. There is nothing worse than getting your house all clean and organized and then having these super messy jobs create more work for you!
Create A System: Do what works best for you. If you don’t like to be bothered with laundry on the weekends, try putting a load in each morning before you start your day. Swapping loads of laundry out in the afternoon/evening can be an easy way to help manage a chore that you don’t want to devote an entire day to. Choose one chore to do each day. I like to do my vacuuming twice a week because of the kids and pets. I put that on my schedule two times each week and I do the bathrooms on Thursday. Breaking up these chores can help keep you from wasting an entire weekend day cleaning! A schedule is great to start in the New Year and it will help you stay on top of all the little messes.
Declutter: You can’t keep everything…you can try but it will eventually be overwhelming. I recently gave myself a few days to catch up on the declutter process. Work your way through each room doing the same steps. If you haven’t used the item since last you cleaned it: donate it, trash it, or pack it away. Only allow yourself a limited space for packing things away. Reserve this space for important items only! Starting the New Year with a minimalistic view will help keep you from accumulating extra “stuff” throughout the year.
Pets: Don’t forget to clean and organize for your furry loved ones. They accumulate stuff just like we do. Sort through toys, beds, accessories, etc. and make sure that you are only keeping things that are in good condition and useful! Wash pet beds and cloth toys to make sure that you aren’t leaving behind odors in your newly clean home!
Clothing: This is a big one for us! Go through your clothing, if you haven’t worn it in the last season it’s time to donate it or trash it! Don’t keep things that do not fit! Starting out the new year with a small but effective wardrobe will make you feel better and keep you on track for the rest of your yearly goals. Starting a new year’s resolution to lose weight or get in shape is not a great reason to keep clothing that doesn’t fit. Instead, use this as a chance to feel comfortable in clothing that fits correctly and once you need smaller sizes use the chance to shop as a reward for meeting your goals! Remember to take it slowly. Give yourself a few days to get everything done. Working through one room at a time or two if you have a whole day can make the whole process manageable. Once you dedicate something to a pile LEAVE IT THERE! This is so important. Bag the items up and put them in your car to donate or at the curb for trash. Leaving it in the house just gives it an extra chance to be pulled back in! Another great thing to do is offer items to friends and family. If you have things you don’t want to trash or donate offer them up for “adoption” they’ll be excited to receive something “new” and you’ll be one step closer to your goals!
