I am so excited for this time of year!! Now I realize not everyone isn’t in the Northwest but our farm stands and farm stores closed in October/November for the main part. However the past month they have started to open up again!!! Now I know some farm stores are not seen as not frugal but shopping around can help you find some hidden gems. However, you will find some that just never have any deals nor do they come down on their prices. Either way like deal searching it’s important to take the time to look around. This post includes some shopping links that will earn a small commission for the site when used.
Now even though I love to save money I do love to support our local economy and small business by shopping at the farm stands and farm stores. I know I am lucky to live where I live, I have a good one less than a quarter mile from my house. However as with anything else I do have a price point where I can’t justify the cost difference and you know what I am okay with that. Now there are a couple of things you can do to save even more by shopping farm stands, now things may be a bit different in your are but this is what works for me in my area and should give you a good start for where you live.
How To Save Money At The Farm Stand:
Watch For Signs: Many of our farm stands will put road signs out saying what the current specials are!! I mean you can beat old school advertising to get you in the door while driving past. There have been many times we have stopped to pick up an impulse watermelon or corn on the cob due to a killer sale!
Facebook: This is a new one for me the past two years. Many of my farm stands now have Facebook pages and will advertise when they get in a new veggie or fruit and the sale price. I do have to say this can be my favorite way, I often check my favorites for current sales and decide which to hit
Website/E-mail List: Now only one of my stores has this but I still utilize it. I am sure as time goes on this will be more common place for farm stores and produce stands to have a site in busy parts of the country. I am hoping that more will offer coupons in the email and it could very well be the case for your area so be sure to check for them!
Groupon/Daily Deal Sites: Its not very often but sometimes a deal offer comes along to try out a new farm store. Some of my favorite ones are for farm experiences to take the kids to.
Word Of Mouth: If it’s a good store people will talk about it. I found out about two of mine because of Weight Watcher Meetings and the women talking about how amazing the fruits and veggies were as well as the staff.
Now what do we get at our farm stores?? Typically they tend to be less as they are in their season. Don’t be afraid to ask them when what season is coming up, all of mine love to share this information and where the produce is coming from.
- Apples
- Watermelon
- Corn on the cob
- Gold potatoes
- Russet potatoes
- Red Potatoes
- Mushrooms
- Asparagus
- Huge zucchinis
