This summer has been hard for my family. We have always talked about how blessed we have been because not much death or serious sickness has hit our family. Well, that all changed in May. That was when we found out a close family member had three forms of cancer and six months to a year to live. Sadly, he made it only one month and six days. Right after his passing, we found out another close family member has breast cancer, and another extended family member was given six months to live.
Needless to say, we are learning a lot of what it means to be a caregiver.
I have to give my mom credit. We always know how strong our parents are, but to watch mine step up for these close family members has been amazing, while heartbreaking at the same time. You know your parents will always do everything for you, but to watch them go above and beyond for someone not their child, it kind of makes you wonder how you would handle that same situation. I feel bad not being with them in Vancouver, but stuck supporting them and family from Tacoma.
I don’t think I had ever realized how much caregivers really do for someone until I had to watch my family go through all this awful cancer. We have taken a lot from our experiences so far, and, sadly, we know a new road is just beginning as my family member is beginning chemo and radiation soon after recovering from surgery.
One aisle I have always passed over in stores is the aisle with caregiving products. The kids got the idea to make a basket of goodies for my mom!! I mean what better little pick me up than a caregiver gift basket, right? I decided to make a basket of items that my mom has commented have been a lifesaver for her. I was amazed at how many different Member’s Mark products were available at Sam’s Club!
Did you know that Sam’s Club has a caregiving program called Sam’s Club Family Caregiving?? You can see more information about the program → here and more about their Member’s Mark products → here.
I love being a member of the club and was excited for find Member’s Mark Premium Adult Washcloths for only $8.88!! With the amount of assisted cleanings my mom has done, I knew having multiples would be a time saver for her!
What We Included In Our Caregiver Gift Basket:
- Member’s Mark Premium Adult Washcloths
- Hand Soap
- Lotion
- Candy
- Drink Mixes
- Gift Cards
- Adult coloring book
- Word find
- Colored Pencils
The possibilities really are endless as to what you can include! I know my mom has commented a couple times how hard it is to care for someone and cook, so gift cards for restaurants are a lifesaver on days filled with appointments or unexpected sickness.
Plus it really is amazing how many times you wash your hands when you are taking care of someone! You can go through a lot of hand soap trying to keep germs away, so using lotion often becomes a must. Being sure to include extra treats (like candy) will make the caregiver realize you appreciate what they are doing, even if you’re not the one that is getting taken care of.
What would you include in a caregiver gift basket?
